I will admit I tried reading the book when I was a teenager and could not get past the first paragraph. Then I tried again during my early twenties and barely made it though the first page. It is said that the third time is a charm… and oh-my-stars… I read it and loved it. I LOVED IT. What is more mortifying … I find I love Georgian English!!! It is true. English is a rich language, abundant in words that are specific to one’s intention and notions, and we so often settle for general, un-interesting, repetitive terms and expressions. I dare say that if one were to explore the richness of the English language in everyday conversation one would be considered pretentious.
I started a vocabulary list at the back of my book. Every time I found a word I was familiar with but could not use in a sentence, or a word I simply did know, I penciled it in the back and looked up its meaning. Ok, so the idea is not novel but I learned so many new words!!! Did I mention I love Georgian English...?

"The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination."
— Elizabeth Hardwick
